Itinerary for the 2 days gorilla trekking trip to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda

Day 1: Pick up from from Kigali and drive to Volcanoes National Park for your gorilla trek and twin lakes tour

After early breakfast, the driver guide shall pick you up from the hotel or residence and travel north of Rwanda to Musanze District. Driving through the beautiful landscape of rolling hills, you shall appreciate why Rwanda is famously referred to as the “land of thousand hills”. Arrive in Musanze and then transfer to your accommodation which overlooks the stunning Virunga range! After check in we drive to the twin lakes, Ruhondo and Burera, located on the outskirts of the park in the foot of Mt. Mgahinga and set out on a boat ride to explore the beautiful scenery.

Day 2: Gorilla Trek in Volcanoes National Park and drive back to Kigali

Early wake up for breakfast, get packed lunch from the lodge and transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7.00am. kinigi-park-headquartersMeet other Gorilla trekkers while the driver guide registers your Gorilla permit with the park officers to get you assigned a Gorilla group. Note that though the 10 available Gorilla groups are distributed in different areas of the park, the park’s advance trackers are able to located them very early in the morning as they wake up, and so before you head out to track them their movements are relayed to your ranger guides. This helps the rangers to assign the Groups suitably in accordance with trekking ability especially basing on a trekker’s age. You may also request the guide to put in a word for you if you wish to trek either the challenging but more adventurous distant Groups or the relatively easier and closer groups. After you get the Gorilla group, meet with your particular Gorilla group’s trekkers and ranger guide for the briefing, and by 8.00am you get into the cars and transfer to the starting point of the trek into the park (trail head). You shall find porters here whom you can hire for only USD 10 to carry your backpack and provide that push or pull when need arises. You are provided with the trekking sticks that shall help you with keeping your footing in certain rough terrain, pushing away the stinging nettles or other obstructions in your path. You are then off into the thick jungles to find the Mountain Gorillas. It could take from a few minutes to several hours of trekking to find the Gorillas, but during which you get to observe other rare wildlife and enjoy beautiful views. Golden Monkeys, Forest Elephants, Buffaloes and plenty of endemic birds share this habitat as well. When you finally find the Mountain Gorillas, you get observe them and take pictures (NO FLUSH ALLOWED) for only one hour, but it shall sure be the most memorable one hour of your travel life! Return to the trail head to meet your driver and transfer to the park headquarters once again and pick your Gorilla tracking certificate and after which you leave for Kigali for the end of the trip.
