This 3 days Rwanda tour offers a once in a lifetime opportunity of tracking chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest national park. Nyungwe forest national park harbors one of the biggest populations of chimpanzees in east Africa numbering over 500. You will track one of the two habituated troops in Nyungwe forest and its sister forest Cyamudongo.

A trip to Nyungwe forest national park is not complete without the popular canopy walk! The first in East Africa, the canopy walkway suspends 50 meters above the ground and provides breathtaking views across the forest, and will also put you at eyelevel with the hard-to-see canopy dwellers such as monkeys and birds.

  • Age restrictions: must be at least 16 years of age to track the Chimpanzees, no exceptions! While the minimum age for the canopy walk is 6 years.

Itinerary for the 3 day Rwanda chimpanzee tracking and canopy walk tour

Day 1 – Drive from Kigali to Nyungwe forest national park

We will leave Kigali at 7am after breakfast and drive to Nyungwe forest national park in the southwest of Rwanda. We will stop over in Butare for early and thereafter set out to visit the ethnographic museum to learn about the cultural history of the people of Rwanda and the East African people. From there we will continue to Nyungwe, arriving in the evening and checking into the lodge on the fringes of the awe-inspiring forest.

Day 2 – Chimpanzee tracking and canopy walk in Nyungwe

Chimpanzee Tracking Rwanda

After early breakfast we will transfer to the nearest reception center by 5am to meet the ranger guides for the pre-trek briefing and thereafter drive to the point you start the trek into the Nyungwe forest to track the chimpanzees. After one hour or two the chimps may be found and you will have only one hour to observe them. We will then drive back to the lodge for lunch.

Later we will drive to Uwinka , the main reception center of the park, and set out for the canopy walk. This is a highlight of any Nyungwe tour. Enjoy epic views of the Nyungwe forest and catch elusive wildlife in the canopies such monkeys and birds!

Day 3 – Optional morning hike/Angola Colobus monkey trek, drive back to Kigali

Before driving back to Kigali, we may set out for a hiking adventure in Nyungwe forest National Park. Nyungwe has a number of trails that you can hike to explore waterfalls, nice view points, and observe a plethora of rare plant life and other wildlife. Alternatively you can go for the Angola Colobus monkey tracking near Gisakura. There are 400 Angolan Colobus in Nyungwe forest which is the largest group recorded in the world.

After activity or breakfast we will drive back to Kigali.
