Akagera national park boasts of unrivalled scenic beauty and diversity. Akagera has all the famous “big five”, that is, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhino, & Elephant. The common animals you will see during the 3 day Akagera trip include antelopes, elephants, lions, giraffes, monkeys, zebra, crocodiles, hippos, fish eagles among others.

Itinerary for the 3 day trip to Akagera National Park is as follows:

 Day 1 – drive from Kigali City to Akagera National Park, game drive and boat cruise

Your tour guide/driver shall pick you from your hotel/residence in Kigali at 7.00am and depart for Akagera National Park in the east of Rwanda. The distance from Kigali to entrance gate of Akagera National Park is about 110km and the travel time is about two and half hours. Upon arriving at Akagera you shall immediately go on a game drive for your first wildlife sightings and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Later you shall check into your lodge and have lunch. At 2.30pm you shall go for a one hour boat ride on Lake Ihema, the biggest lake in the park. The boat ride offers wonderful views of hippos and crocodiles and other wildlife along the lake shores and the islands.

Day 2 – day game drive in Akagera National Park

Today you shall enjoy another game drive in Akagera National Park covering more drive trails sighting more animals.

Optional activity:

You can do a night game drive after 6pm to look for the elusive nocturnal animals such as leopard, hyena, jackal, genet, bushbabies, porcupine, serval, etc…

Day 3 – Full game drive and exit the park

After early breakfast you shall check out of the lodge and drive to the Kilala plains in the north of the park. The Kilala plains are beautiful flat savanna plains where a lot of animals graze such as antelopes, buffaloes, and zebras, and this makes them a favorite hunting ground for the predators such as the lions and hyenas. The plains are therefore the main animal viewing area of the park. After a rewarding game drive in the Kilala plains you shall exit the park and depart for Kigali.
