4 Days Mountain Gorillas and Wildlife Safari Rwanda – Akagera and Volcanoes National Park

Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali – Akagera National Park

Have early breakfast and leave for the eastern province of Rwanda to visit Akagera National Park for a rewarding wildlife safari. On arrival you will do a game drive to introduce you to the beautiful scenery and spot some wildlife, before proceeding to your accommodation for lunch. In the afternoon you will go for the boat trip on Lake Ihema which exposes you to plenty of wildlife including pods of Hippos, Crocodiles, and lots of water birds and animals which come to the shores to cool off and drink water. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Half day Game Drive – Volcanoes National Park

giraffe in Akagera national parkWake up to an early snack with hot coffee/tea and set out for a half day game drive, this time to the northern part of the park which has the biggest volume and variety of animals. Big game such as Giraffes, Buffaloes, Zebras, Elephant, and several Antelope species roam the beautiful savannah plains back-dropped by rolling hills. There is also a chance of spotting the cats such as the Leopard, Hyena but these are quite elusive! For the birding enthusiasts, Akagera has one of the highest concentration of birds in Africa with over 500 species recorded. Return to the lodge for brunch, check out and depart for the northern province of Rwanda, driving through Kigali City. Arrive in Musanze in the evening and check into your accommodation situated outside Volcanoes National Park. Dine and overnight.

Day 3: Mountain Gorilla trekking

baby mountain gorilla rwandaHave early breakfast, and transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7.00am. You will take packed lunch from the lodge and also do not forget to carry drinking water and a rain jacket. After you have been assigned a Gorilla group, meet the rangers for pre tracking briefing after which you drive to the start of the trek. Find the Gorillas and spend up to the one hour with them. Return to the lodge for relaxation. Depending on how earlier you will have gotten back from the Gorilla trek you could do a visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village which entails a number of activities including traditional dance performances, mock cultural wedding, shooting arrows with the Batwa people, traditional cooking procedures, etc.. Dine and overnight.

Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking – Kigali City

golden monkey eating potatoAfter early breakfast, once again you will transfer to the park headquarters by 7.00am to meet the rangers and thereafter transfer to the start of the Golden Monkeys trek into the bamboo vegetation at the bottom of Mt. Sabinyo. The troop comprises of over 100 Golden Monkeys which you will find easily after a light trek. With their striking golden-orange fur contrasting the lush green rainforest, you shall have a memorable experience with great photos. Return to the lodge for lunch after which you shall check out and depart for Kigali City.
