4 Days Tour Volcanoes National Park – Mt. Bisoke Hike, Golden Monkey Tracking, Twin Lakes Burera & Ruhondo


Day 1: Kigali – Twin Lakes – Volcanoes National Park

Have early breakfast, as the driver guide shall be picking you up from the hotel at 7.00am to start the trip to the northern province of Rwanda. Your first visit will be to the twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo which are situated on outskirts of Volcanoes National Park, at the base of Mt. Muhavura. Tourists visiting the Volcanoes often overlook these lakes which are such a gem! The lakes, dotted with several islands, are ringed by cultivated green highlands and set against a breathtaking backdrop of the Virunga Mountains.twin lakes rwandaYou shall do a canoe ride on the lakes to explore the islands, enjoy the breathtaking landscape, wetland habitat and plenty of water birds. After the twin lakes tour you proceed to your accommodation situated outside Volcanoes National Park for the rest of the day.

Day 2: Bisoke Crater Lake Hike (3711m)

Have early breakfast, take packed lunch and drinking water and transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7.00am. Register for the activity and meet the ranger for the pre-trek briefing after which you transfer to the trailhead of the hike situated just outside the park. Porters to carry your backpack are available for hire at USD 10. Hiking sticks are provided free of charge and trek starts. trekking-rwandaMt. Bisoke, 3711m, is of one the 5 Virunga Mountains in Volcanoes National Park. It lies on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, though the summit lies within Rwanda. The volcano is popular for the big Crater Lake at the summit hence the local “Bisoke” which translates to “Soaked with water”. mt bisoke crater lakeThe trek starts at an altitude of 2700m and goes through different layers of vegetation, ranging from bamboo, hagenia-hypericum (2800m – 3200m), to Senecio – Lobelia bush at the top. Enjoy magnificent views along the hike, and encounter a plethora of rare and unique wildlife, ranging from trees, shrubs, orchids, birds, Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys, birds. The trek is categorized medium to tough hence good fitness preparation is paramount for better enjoyment. In total the hike is 6 hours, 4 going up and 2 coming down. Return to meet the driver at the trailhead and transfer to the hotel.

Day 3: Golden Monkey tracking – Cultural tour to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

Have early breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters by 7.00am. Meet the ranger guides for the pre-trek briefing after which you transfer to Mt. Sabinyo for the Golden Monkey tracking activity. He experience involves a light trek through the bamboo vegetation at the bottom of the mountain where a large troop of habituated Golden Monkeys lives. golden-monkey-volcanoes-rwandaGolden Monkeys can only be found in the Virunga Mountains which span across border of three neighboring countries of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their striking golden-orange fur contrasts with the green forest of the Virunga Mountain to give great photos. You allowed an hour with them, after which you return and transfer to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon you shall go for a cultural tour of in the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village in Kinigi which offers the opportunity to experience authentic traditional lifestyles of the local people. Activities include grinding millet and sorghum on the local grinding stone to make food, shoot arrows with the Batwa people, and listen to the traditions and practices narrated by the elders. There is also a dance presentation by the traditional Intore dancers, and a mock cultural wedding in the King’s place with you being the king! intore-dancersReturn in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Volcanoes – Kigali City

Breakfast and check out, depart for Kigali City. Take a tour of the city and visit some of the interesting spots, including the craft markets, Gisozi genocide memorial site and Kigali Museum. Have lunch and drop off at your hotel.
