6 days Rwanda mountain hiking tour

This 6 day hiking tour in Rwanda will give you an amazing volcano hiking experience in the Volcanoes National Park which is Rwanda’s prime hiking destination. Volcanoes National Park has 5 of the major 7 volcanic cones of the Virunga Mountains which are spread along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Virunga mountains offer a hiking experience like no other, with breathtaking rolling lush mountain scenery and a chance to see rare wildlife such as the mountain gorillas. On this 6 day hiking trip in Rwanda you shall do the 2 day hike on Mt. Karisimbi which is the highest volcano in the Virungas and a 1 day hike on either Mt. Bisoke or Mt. Muhavura. And, in between the 2 volcano hikes you shall do the golden monkey trekking in the base of Mt. Sabyinyo which is a light adventure and will give some rest

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – travel to Musanze, afternoon canoe trip on River Mukungwa

You will be picked from your hotel in Kigali at 8am and drive north to Musanze District which hosts the Volcanoes National Park.

You will check into your lodge and have lunch.

Later you will do the Mukungwa river canoe trip with Kingfisher Journeys at 2pm. The trip is about 3 hours. It is a nice adventure riding down River Mukungwa in Musanze that offers a wonderful chance to explore the lush countryside and enjoy the beautiful scenery, chat the locals down the river and gain an insight into their way of life and watch some wildlife such as birds and otters.

Day 2 – Day hike on Mt. Bisoke or Mt. Muhavura

Today you shall do your first hiking experience in the Virungas and it shall be one day round trip meaning you hike to the top of the mountain and get back to your lodge in one day.

You can hike either Mt. Bisoke or Mt. Muhavura.

Mountain Bisoke is located between Mt. Sabyinyo and Mt. Karisimbi, almost in the middle of the Virungas, and is shared along the Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo borders. The biggest highlight of Bisoke is the large beautiful crater on the summit, and because of this it is the most popular volcano in the park for day hikes.

Mount Muhabura is the second highest on the chain and is situated on the end/start of the Virunga mountains, shared between Rwanda and Uganda. Mount Muhabura provides a different view of the Virunga mountains, nice views of twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo below and has a nice crater lake the summit though not as massive as Bisoke’s

Day 3 – golden monkeys tracking

Today you shall go back for the golden monkey trekking adventure which is done in the base of Mt. Sabyinyo. The golden monkeys are unique to the Virunga mountains and they live in the bamboo forests at the base of the mountains. They are very attractive and active as well and offer a great tracking experience. This is a short activity, after which you shall relax the rest of the day.

Day 4 – Begin your Mt. Karisimbi hike

After early breakfast, at 7am you shall go to the meet your hiking team of porters, park guides, chef and security and head off to hike Mt. Karisimbi, the highest volcano in the Virunga Mountains. Mt. Karisimbi is shared on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. You will pitch tent at altitude 3700 meters and spend the night here.

Day 5 – Summit Mt. Karisimbi and hike down

You will rise up early for breakfast and summit Mt. Karisimbi, return to the camp for lunch before continuing down the mountain to meet your tour driver and transfer to your lodge and relax away the rest of the day

Optional:

On descending from Mt. Karisimbi you can transfer to Lake Kivu for relaxation

Day 6 – Travel back to Kigali

Today you shall travel back to Kigali
