6 days Rwanda volcano hiking tour in volcanoes national park

This 6 day Rwanda hiking and trekking adventure is the ideal tour for hiking in Volcanoes National Park and Rwanda. There are five volcanoes in Volcanoes National Park but each of the volcanoes is trekked independently since there is no trail covering all of them. The three volcanoes – Muhabura, Gahinga and Bisoke offer one day hikes, while Karisimbi is a two day hike and offers an experience comparable to mountain climbing. Bisoke (3711m) is the most popular of the one day volcano hikes because of its large beautiful crater lake at the summit as well as the breathtaking views and highest chances of seeing the Gorillas on the trail. We thus combine the one day Bisoke and 2 day Karisimbi hikes to provide wonderful hiking experience in Rwanda. Between the hikes we enjoy the Golden Monkey trek, alternatively the Mountain Gorilla trek!

Day 1 – travel to Volcanoes National Park

We will set off from Kigali City to Musanze in the north of Rwanda at your most convenient time of the day but being mindful that the journey to Musanze is 2 to 3 hours by road.

Day 2 – Mount Bisoke hike in Volcanoes National Park

After early breakfast we transfer to the park headquarters at Kingi by 7.30am, meet the ranger guides for the briefing after which we transfer to the foot of Mount Bisoke. We momentarily take in the views of the lush volcano that we about to conquer! We are given a free hiking stick, nicely crafted. You may hire a porter for only ten dollars from many that will be stationed here. We then set out to climb Bisoke! The first ten to fifteen minutes is a walk outside the park passing through the local community and an open area with some grass and thickets, and soon we cross the stone wall which marks the boundary of the park, and are in forest and climbing up Mount Bisoke! The round trek takes on average 6 hours, 4 hours to the summit and 2 hours back to the bottom.

Day 3 – optional activities: Golden Monkey trek, Gorilla trek

After the grueling Bisoke volcano hike today will be for recovery with a light but exciting activity in Volcanoes National Park. The Golden Monkey trek is one of the nice adventures in the park. After the meeting the rangers at the headquarters we transfer to the foot of Mount Sabinyo and set out to track a large troop of habituated Golden Monkeys which inhabit the bamboo forest at the base of the volcano. After Golden Monkey trek we will relax away the rest of the day, or visit the local markets in Ruhengeri town for an experience of the local life.

Day 4 & 5 – Climbing Mount Karisimbi

Today we are taking on the bigger challenge in climbing Mount Karisimbi! With our camping equipment and foot in tow we will report to the park headquarters at Kinigi to meet the ranger guides and then transfer to the same starting point we used for the Bisoke hike. We will have camping equipment and foodstuffs so porters will come in handy. After the ceremonial walk through the community we get over the stone wall into the park. We walk the familiar Bisoke Crater Lake trail for 30 minutes before taking on the branch off trail to the Dian Fossey site, and this takes across the saddle and up to Mount Karisimbi! We will set camp at 3700m for the overnight. Next day we push up to the peak and make the return journey to the bottom.
