Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Forest Park Uganda

The Gorilla Habituation Experience or Habituation Gorilla trek in Bwindi forest National Park in Uganda is a unique activity that allows for spending more time with a family of Mountain Gorillas. The popular Gorilla trekking activity in Rwanda and Uganda allows a maximum of one hour with the gorillas which goes so fast and for many visitors they are left wanting for more which the habituation will provide.

The Gorilla habituation experience is done only in Uganda and in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The experience allows up to 4 hours with the Gorillas. And this means more trekking in the Bwindi impenetrable jungle in trying to keep with the gorillas which are not well habituated and move a bit more compared to the fully habituated gorillas for the normal gorilla treks that will often stay in one area for you to observe easily. You are trekking through mountainous terrain and therefore there is demand for more fitness from the traveler.

So far there are only two families for the habituation experience, both of which are undergoing the habituation process for future gorilla treks, and both are situated in the Rushaga region of Bwindi Forest National Park. The Rushaga region is in the southern part of Bwindi and is accessed via Kisoro town. It is also the region with the most number of habituated gorilla families hence a favorite destination for gorilla trekking in Uganda. Other gorilla tourism regions of Bwindi National Park include Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Nyondo.

A maximum of four travelers are allowed to visit a gorilla family for the habituation experience, this is down from the maximum eight people allowed for the gorilla trek.

The Gorilla habituation experience permit costs USD 1500, which is much more expensive than the gorilla trekking permit of USD 600, but it is well worth it as you get to spend more time with the great apes and more time in the awe-inspiring Bwindi jungle where you observe an array of rare plant life, birds, and other animals such as monkeys, and other gorillas and enjoy the wonderful views of sprawling mountain scenery.

There is an age limit of 15 years and above to be allowed to do the experience, just like it is for the gorilla trek, and the same rules and etiquette apply.

The limited number of just four permits and only two gorilla families available means you have to book your permits and tour well in advance.

Nature Trails East Africa will organize your Uganda safari tour with the gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi. Short trips can also be done coming in from Rwanda which is only about 3 hours from Kigali by road.
