Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali – Butare – Nyungwe Forest National Park

Have early breakfast so that you depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park by 7.00am. The park is situated in the southern province, 135km from Kigali, which will take roughly 5 hours of drive to reach. There are tourist sites along the way that you shall visit, including the National Museum of Rwanda in Butare. The museum is one of the best sources of information on the cultural history of Rwanda and East Africa region. After this visit you shall have lunch in Butare before proceeding to Nyungwe, arriving late afternoon.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking – Canopy Walk

Chimpanzee Tracking RwandaBe up by 5am for breakfast and transfer to the reception center to meet the rangers and set off for the trek into the forest to find the Chimps. Such an early start aims to find Chimpanzees before they de-nest (wakeup) and start moving which makes finding them a challenge given the rough terrain and the speed at which they move. You get to enjoy the pre-historic atmosphere of this rainforest that dates to before the ice age, observe beautiful plants you won’t see anywhere else, orchids, different monkey species and a range of bird species. When you find the Chimps you have up to an hour of observing them and taking pictures, after which you return to the lodge, and have lunch. canopy walk nyungwe forest rwandaIn the afternoon you shall head out for the canopy walk which kicks off at the main reception center of Uwinka. The walkway rises 50 meters into the upper storey of the forest and covers close to 200 meters in length. The walkway offers exhilarating views over and across the massive rainforest, as well as an easy view of arboreal wildlife which is otherwise hard to spot from the ground, such as monkeys and birds. This activity is about 2 hours long, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Nyungwe – Twin Lakes – Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast you leave for Musanze in the northern province of Rwanda to visit Volcanoes National Park, home of the Mountain Gorillas. Before transferring to your accommodation in Musanze you will first go visit the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera which are situated on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park. twin lakes rwandaGet to the view point and enjoy the beautiful view – the lakes are dotted with green islands, ringed with cultivated highlands and back-dropped by the Virunga Mountains of Volcanoes National Park. From there you will continue to Musanze and check in at your accommodation situated just outside of the park. Dine and overnight.

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking – Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

Mountain Gorilla Trekking RwandaYou will be up as early as 6am for breakfast, get packed lunch and drinking and transfer to the park headquarters in Kingi. After you are allocated a Gorilla group, meet with the rangers for the pre-trekking briefing after which you transfer to the starting point for the gorilla trek. Move into the park and search for the Gorillas with the guide of park’s advance trackers who could have prior knowledge of their location. You shall spend an hour with the Mountain Gorillas, and getting within 7 meters of these great apes is a life-changing experience! Return and transfer back to the accommodation for relaxation and lunch. Later you shall visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village in Kinigi where you have an opportunity to experience the culture and traditions of these local people. There are a number of activities including a mock cultural wedding, dance performance by the traditional Intore dancers, shoot arrows with the Batwa people, grinding millet and sorghum the local way, listen to the elders as they narrate about the traditions and practices of the local people, etc.. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Golden Monkey Tracking – Kigali

a golden monkey in the potato fieldsHave breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters at 7.00am. Meet the rangers for briefing after which you travel to the start of the trek into the park find a group of habituated Golden Monkeys. This group lives in the bamboo vegetation along the bottom of the Mt. Sabinyo. This is an easy trek and finding the monkeys does not take long. Observe these beautiful monkeys which are extremely pleasing and great for photos! After the allowed one hour, return to the lodge for lunch. Thereafter check out and leave for Kigali City for the end of the trip.
