The Matheniko and Bokora Corridor Wildlife Reserves (MBCWR) is an untouched little known wilderness in the north east of Uganda. It is located in the dry scrubland of the Karamoja plains, near Mount Moroto and Moroto town – Karamoja’s regional capital.
There are few animals to see in the reserves, but this is one of the best places to see the Ostriches in Uganda. Never-the-less, there is a record of rare wildlife such as the Lesser and Greater Kudu. Other antelopes recorded there include: Bright’s Gazelle, Bohor Reedbuck, Dik-dik, Bush Duiker, and Oribi. Other animals include: Warthogs, Monkeys (Vervet & Patas), Baboons, Leopard, and Jackals.
The wildlife reserves are named after the two tribes of this area, the Matheniko and the Bokora people. Unlike the Karamojong these two tribes are not known cattle rustlers. That is to say, they do not have a history of hostility in the region like their Karamojong neighbors who have a strong tradition of cattle rustling.
MBCWR is located between two major wildlife destinations of Karamoja, i.e. Kidepo Valley National Park and Pian Upe wildlife reserve. This makes it easy to include this destination on your itinerary, and makes for a good convenient stop between the two destinations.
Though Matheniko and Bokora reserves may not be great for big game watching, the corridor is a must visit for birdwatching. It is one of the places to look for the Karamoja Apalis (one of Uganda’s endemic birds). This is in addition to lots of birds of prey and barbets as well as specialty species of the Karamoja plains and north eastern Uganda which cuts into the Somali – Masai biome.
It is also great for an African camping experience if one if looking for a raw african wilderness experience.
This is arguably the driest area of Uganda and temperatures are quite high, especially during the dry months of June – September. It can get unbearably hot! Sunscreen, sun glasses, hat/cap, and lot of drinking water should be in your possession when visiting this place!
The reserve is a birding hotspot of Karamoja and north eastern Uganda which cannot be excluded from your birding trip through this part of Uganda. It is one of the places to search for the Karamoja Apalis. The stunning Red-and-yellow Barbet is one to look forward to, along with many other barbets (D’Arnaud’s Barbet is simply a nuisance here). The striking Superb Starling is numerous here.
Learn about different types of plants and their use by the local people. For instance the toothbrush shrub whose branches the local people use as toothrush, little wonder these locals have such white and strong teeth.
This is perhaps the best way to explore the interior of the reserves where the car cannot reach and too far to walk.
Get an opportunity to visit the Matheniko and Bokora communities and learn about they cultures and what differentiates them from the more known Karamojong people of the region.
Visit the largest cultural village in east Africa Nakapelimoru for the best experience of the Karamojong culture. While there also visit the interesting huge sliding rocks and get some play time
Experience a raw African wilderness by camping out in the bush
There are no hotels/lodges in the reserve and only option is bring own tents and camp. Security is provided by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Ablution facilities are available for the campers.
If you want a more comfortable stay then better sleep in a hotel in Moroto town. It is a 30 – 40 minutes’ drive from Moroto town to Matheniko – Bokoro Wildlife Reserves
There are a number of hotel options in Moroto town including: Hotel Africana, Kara Tunga Guest House, Uganda Wildlife Authority Guest House, etc…
The easiest way to get to Matheniko and Bokora wildlife reserves by road is through eastern Uganda, via Jinja – Mbale, Kapchorwa, Nakapiripirit and go all the way to Moroto town, then taking the Moroto – Kotido highway which goes through the reserves. This is a long 9 – 10 hour drive. So, you can plan to spend a night at Sipi or Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve to break down the journey.
