Ajai Wildlife Reserve has recently welcomed exciting additions. Following the arrival of rhinos from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary a few months ago, the reserve in West Nile has now received Nubian giraffes from Murchison Falls National Park.
On July 22, 2026, the Uganda Wildlife Authority translocated three Nubian giraffes to Ajai Wildlife Reserve. Nubian giraffes (formerly Rothschild’s giraffe) are critically endangered. Uganda holds the world’s largest population—over 1,900 individuals—with more than 90% found in Murchison Falls National Park. Expanding their range to other reserves is vital for strengthening conservation and ensuring their continued growth.
Beyond Ajai, giraffes have also been successfully translocated to Lake Mburo National Park, where they have flourished and become a highlight of safari trips to Lake Mburo National Park. Pian Upe and Kidepo Valley National Park have also received giraffes from Murchison Falls.
The arrival of giraffes in Ajai is expected to enrich the game-viewing experience and boost the reserve’s appeal. Other notable species reintroduced here include Uganda kob, zebra, and buffalo.
